Is Yoga And Pilates Actually Good For Golf? Part 2

Is Yoga And Pilates Actually Good For Golf? Part 2

This is going to be a short post. Maybe?

I have looked around and asked a few questions, it appears that the slow movements of Yoga or Pilates will have no problem strengthening the muscles to deal with the movement in a Golf swing or its explosive nature.

No doubt some would disagree, but as I have said the overall general consensus is that it will do more good than harm.

This is because the body will become strong and flexible enough to cope. The exercises have been developed to improve the bodies ability at various functions but mainly its overall health.

These are my findings, some may agree and some may not. One thing is sure though, if you have no Golf fitness then you are more susceptible to injury and will not play your best game.

The solution therefore is to improve your Golf fitness.

Cardiovascular exercise for Golf

Cardiovascular exercise for Golf

Make no bones about it Golf is a physical sport! There is a lot of walking involved and most of it is on uneven ground, up and down hill. There is also the explosive movement of the muscles during the Golf swing. How many times have you completed a round and known that you have worked?

All this movement puts stress on the whole of the body and the heart and lungs as well. If they do not work well then they will not feed enough Oxygen to the muscles and the muscles will not work properly either. This can lead to a decrease in performance on the round that you are playing. Not to mention other health risks that could happen as a result of the heart and lungs working too hard.

By having a set of lungs and a heart that work better than your opponents then you will consistently play better and more controlled shots then they do. You will also enjoy more energy and better health.

There are really no Golf specific exercises for the heart and lungs (cardiovascular system) But there are exercises that can be done to improve their performance and as a result your game and overall health.

Some could argue that a game of Golf is walking and therefore not a lot of stress is placed on the heart and lungs as say running would place. Whilst this is true, it must be remembered that for all the time that you are playing a round of Golf you are using muscles all the time and with more vigour than you would normally do. This requires fuel and Oxygen.

In order to get the best out of your game you need to be able to get Oxygen to your muscles efficiently and this means having a cardiovascular system that can cope. This means exercising it.

All Golf fitness plans should include cardiovascular exercises to get you fit for Golf. Unlike stretching and resistance exercises here we are concentrating our Golf fitness plan and Golf exercises on our basis to get Oxygen to our muscles.

The more common type of cardiovascular exercises that will improve your Golf fitness are:
  1. Jogging. As a lighter, more gentle form of running. Running is good, but at the start is a lot to put the body through. Start slowly with a pace just above walking and build up over time with a faster pace. Time does not mean over one jogging session. Increase the pace to shorten the time once you have established a comfortable jogging speed. The idea is to always be putting small amounts of stress on the heart and lungs to make them work harder than you normally would. This can be done as said already by increasing the pace over the same distance or increasing the distance. I, personally like to increase the distance. Jogging on grass or other natural surfaces has also been argued to be better on the skeleton as it does not suffer the same through impact shock of the foot striking the floor.
  2. Walking. A lower impact version of Jogging. This should be done as with jogging, in that you start slow and build up the pace or the distance. All walking of this nature should really be done faster than you would ordinarily walk at.
  3. Swimming. Although supported by the water tends to be a good exercise in that we can not breath underwater so the breathing has to be controlled yet allow us to deliver enough Oxygen to perform the activity well. Also the water acts as a resistance to our muscles thereby increasing their need for Oxygen to work better.
  4. Cycling. Very good form of cardiovascular exercise in that it does not put as much shock through the skeleton as running does.
To obtain the best results it is advisable to have a mixture of these exercises in your Golf fitness plan. Work out a proper and realistic Golf fitness plan with a professional instructor, and consult your doctor so the Golf fitness instructor is aware of any health issues that may prevent different exercises from being performed.

By including a cardiovascular exercise plan and exercises to strengthen your core muscles and increase your flexibility you will have the best Golf exercises for you. This will result in an improvement in your game, your overall health and your energy levels will increase as well.

Golf Fitness Help: Readers Notice

 Golf Fitness Help:  Readers Notice

I have noticed that Golf Fitness help is looking a bit, well, messy!  This is due to me the author, publishing what I write about when I find it.
Unfortunately this can make it hard for the person searching for the information to find it.  What I have done is to create pages within the blog about a major topic, say Yoga for Golf, or nutrition for Golf.
These pages will not only detail what the subject is and help the reader understand more about it, they will also link back to articles and posts on the main blog page.
What this means is that if the reader is looking for specific information about Golf core strengthening exercises, they can go to the relevant page.  There they can learn an overview (in detail) about core strengthening exercises then use the links on that page to find specific blog posts about their query.

Golf Fitness Challenge Review – A Bare Knuckle, Fists Flying Review

Golf Fitness Challenge Review – A Bare Knuckle, Fists Flying Review

Golfers of all levels are waking up to the need to be fit to play Golf consistently at an increased level. This is probably why so many Golf fitness products are appearing all over the place, including the Internet.

You are probably no different in that you to, want to get fit and play better Golf. This poses the question of just who do you listen to?

To answer that question there are three things to take into account first. These are:
  1. Is the fitness plan actually achievable? That is not as far fetched as it might sound. Some programs are complicated or need more time than you have to give to complete. If this is the case then you will very unlikely see any benefit from it and worse, you may even give up.
  2. You also need to know that the course is written by someone with great authority on the subject! The more experience they have had the better, as they can draw on this knowledge to help you. In short a highly recognised and sort after Golf fitness instructor is best, as they will deliver better benefits to you.
  3. Thirdly and I suppose most of us think this is the most important one of all: Will I see the results I want and have my game and fitness improve? Will these results be measurable?

If you have ever learnt anything about 'how to be successful' from books, recordings, or videos then you will know that for whatever it is you want to be good at there are some basic things that are always the same. These are: Have a goal, Have plan to achieve your goal, and set a deadline by which to achieve your goal.

All the reasons above are why I really do know that Golf Fitness Challenge is as good as it gets. It is the work of not one but two experts in their fields. The first is a sought after Golf fitness instructor, Susan Hill (published author in Resort Living, Golf Illustrated and others, and has worked with Golfing associations and Golf professionals around the world). Craig Ballantyne is the author of Turbulence Training, a Men’s Health magazine training expert, and a member of the Training Advisory Board for Oxygen magazine.

By working together and applying the basic principles of success they have devised Golf Fitness Challenge. A 6 week Golf fitness plan that in very specific detail will lead you to a fitter, stronger body and the game you have always wanted.

They have actually 'road tested' Golf Fitness Challenge with a study on 20 Golfers. It was done with both ladies and gentlemen over 6 weeks ages from 18 to 65 and handicaps from +3 to 31.

What do you think happened?

By being given a deadline and specific things to do,all these Golfers made some fantastic discoveries and a good deal of improvement in both game and fitness. All in time for the main Golf season!

This is what some of them had to say:

I really got a lot more flexible. My shoulder turn improved about 30-40% at least. My hip rotation really improved also. I learned that my glutes, hip flexors, and hamstrings had a whole lot more to do with golf than I had ever imagined.
I had never viewed stretching as a way to make my body feel better and or feel more alive. I had always viewed stretching as something to warm up with. The wholeness of stretching improved my wellness feeling immensely. I just feel better now - bottom line.
Michael, Handicap 9.2, Age 62
I found my core strength improved. This was evident in my increased ability to stay stable in my lower body during the backswing and the initial transition move. I have been striking the ball more crisply.

I have experienced greater flexibility in my hip pelvis region. I am hitting the ball higher than I have in quite some time.

Thank you for including me in your program.
Stephen, Handicap 21, Age 59

If you, as a Golfer are looking to finally and absolutely attain measurable results in your Golf game, then take my advice and put yourself in the hands of Susan and Craig with Golf Fitness Challenge.

Is Yoga And Pilates Actually Good For Golf? Part 1

I put part 1 as I have been doing as I have been doing a little looking into it.  Appears that the Golf swing, as we know, is an explosive movement.  The exercise movements in Yoga and Pilates may not encourage this explosive movement as they condition the body with slow movements.

That is what I am going to try and get to the bottom of and find out.  Does the slow movement of Yoga and Pilates help the fast explosive movement of the Golf swing.

See you in a couple of days with an update.

"Pilates Will It Really Help My Golf?"

"Pilates, Will It Really Help My Golf?"

Everywhere I go, I hear Pilates, Pilates!  Not being familiar with it I looked into it.  Here is what I found.

Pilates was named after the person that came up with the concept a Joesph Pilates in the early 20th Century.

It is a system of developing strength particularly in the 'core muscles' and in developing mental concentration as well.

Since its original conception the discipline has branched into two main areas: Classical and contemporary.  It is not the design of this post to go over all the differences of the two, but they do still both conform to the
six principles which are: concentration, control, center, flow, precision and breathing.

In short, yes I believe it would assist in Golf fitness as it would in any fitness plan.  Although not discussed here but in a similar post I do not see it being any more beneficial than Yoga.  In fact there are system out there that actually combine the two similar and parallel systems.

The whole principle of Pilates and how it is a good fitness program has been demonstrated by its popularity today.  For more advice on Pilates please go here

"Pilates, Will It Really Help My Golf?"

Yoga Vs Pilates

Yoga Vs Pilates

I have been asked a lot of questions about 'Pilates' and is it good for Golf fitness.  IN truth I did not know so I went and looked into it.  Below is what I found out:

Yoga is an ancient form of keeping the body, mind and spirit healthy.  In its purist form it works on all three of these areas.  Pilates works on body and mind.  It leaves the spirit out.

Yoga works all muscles and joints, Pilates concentrates on primarily developing your 'core muscles'.

Yoga puts flexibility before strength, Pilates puts strength before flexibility.  Although both at this point may seem very different, they actually are still very similar as both say you need to be strong to be flexible and flexible to be strong.  This is simply where the exercise systems place their emphasis.

In my opinion the choice between which to use is purely a personal one.  As for me, well I prefer to exercise the whole of my body equally and not concentrate on one specific area.  Therefore I would choose Yoga.  Other would however have a preference for Pilates, for their own reasons.

So that you may get a better understanding of Yoga Vs Pilates please review this site.

Golf Flexibility Training – Revealed Secrets Of The Power And Grace Of The Pros

Golf Flexibility Training – Revealed Secrets Of The Power And Grace Of The Pros

We watch the professional address the ball, raise the club and unleash their swing. Bham! The speed and power leaves us with our mouth open. The length and power of the drive keeps us bewildered. Yet we can do similar ourselves.

It is all down to getting the body flexible enough to carry the swing off in the proper format. Golf flexibility training will give you this.

Before we go any further let me explain. The Golf swing is not a natural movement, it is a function of us (the Golfer) putting the body under tension by stretching and twisting. In order for us to get the maximum return on this we have to be able to twist our body into the best position for us to execute the swing. This means being flexible!

Golf flexibility training is not only simple it is easy as well. Also takes only a little time each day. Did I mention it helps reduce injury? It does. Because it conditions the body to move in this unnatural way and strengthens what is needed for it to do so.

What have we agreed on so far. That Golf flexibility training is essential to help our Golf swing, it is easy and takes very little time. Another benefit is that the muscles involved learn to relax when in position to execute the Golf swing. When muscles are relaxed they actually work better than when under tension. This means more power and better control in your Golf swing.

The sort of exercises that you can do in Golf flexibility training are to develop these attributes in the muscles used in the Golf swing. These muscles are your (in simple terms) Thighs, stomach, lower back.

The Thighs can be stretched simply placing your feet a couple of inches apart and reach down towards your toes. Only go as far as you can, do not over stretch. The idea is not to inflict pain.
This stretches the back of the thighs. Balance this out by doing the same to the front. Place one had against something solid like a wall. Raise the opposite leg by the knee and grab your foot (left hand supporting, bend the right knee and grab that foot). Now gently pull the foot towards your bottom.
That is the front and back of the thighs stretched.

For the lower back, stand or sit up right, chin up and spine straight. I find it easier to have my arms straight out to each side. Then rotate as far as you can one way, hold it for 1-2 seconds and go back through the start position and repeat to the other side.

These are just a starting point as there are many more Golf flexibility training exercises that you can do, but these will help you get a head start.

As with any type of training it must be taken under the guidance of an expert so see one before you start any Golf flexibility training exercises or Golf fitness training of any type.

Do this and you will increase your core muscle strength, muscle and skeletal flexibility, thus giving you a better, more balance and control in your Golf swing.

I hope this simple article and the advice in it have helped you understand the necessity of Golf flexibility training exercises and how to do the simplest of them. If not then reread, if so go try! You will notice the difference that Golf flexibility training exercises make to your game and so will your opponents!

Remember have fun!

Golf fitness – “Senior Golfers Go For Longer!”

Golf fitness – “Senior Golfers go for longer!”

Answer me this: How many times has your chin hit the floor when a person tells you there age? I bet it's lots, maybe more! Your next question is, to them; “What is your secret?”

Do they ever reply “Sitting around doing nothing, lots of booze, cigarettes, wasting time, etc!” No, they don't do they! The answer is nearly always hard work and/or plenty of exercise and a good diet. At the very least it is something similar. Am I right aren't I?

Why is this then? It is because the human being is a machine. All be it a Biomechanical one. Like all machines they need regular maintenance and good fuel. In the case of the human being this means exercise and diet.

The part that Golf plays in this is simple. Just the game in itself encourages walking, strength, flexibility and increased mental awareness. Couple that with a proper Golf fitness plan to improve their game (top professionals have a personal Golf fitness instructor) and you have one very well functioning person regardless of their age or gender (yes ladies you benefit as well).

Just because we get older does not mean that we should stop enjoying the things we do. Yes we may not be as fast or not as strong but we can be fit, strong, flexible and mentally acute for our age. By being fit and active we can all benefit and be an inspiration to others. Playing Golf and having a Golf fitness program tailored to you, your age and gender will help tremendously with your game and your health.

Like any Golfer/athlete of any age don't you owe it to yourself to be the best that you can, to be healthy, both physically and mentally?

When looking directly at the benefits for Senior Golfers they will include Golfers of all ages and gender. To highlight these areas they are listed below:
  1. Increased cardiovascular efficiency
  2. Increased flexibility
  3. Increased muscle tone (power)
  4. Increased balance
  5. Increased mental acuity
  6. Improved posture of the skeleton
  7. Increased social activity

Bet that last one opened your eyes. How can being sociable improve your health?

It has been proven that when we are doing something we enjoy we are not as stressed as we may otherwise be. We laugh more and smile more; we are relaxed. When in this state the brain actually releases chemicals called Endorphins. These actually make us feel good and have a measured difference on brain and body health. Improving both of them.

Amazing isn't it, all that from a game of Golf.

There you can see some of the benefits that a properly planned Golf fitness program can bring to a Golfer. Not just the more senior one's but Golfer's of all ages and genders can benefit from a Golf fitness regime.

Yoga For Golfers

Yoga For Golfers

The benefits of Yoga are endless, and not just to Golfers.  As part of a Golf fitness program, Yoga for Golfers is important.  This is because Yoga creates a more flexible and stronger body, the very thing needed for Golf! Doesn't it make sense then to at least practice some basic Yoga poses in your Golf fitness plan?

To help get an understanding of some Yoga moves that Golfers can use to help improve flexibility  I have included video demonstrations.  These are easier to understand than written or just pictures.

I must add if you try these do so only after consulting a doctor or fitness professional and do not attempt them beyond the limits that your body will allow.  I or the persons in the video are NOT responsible for any benefit or injury that may occur from attempting these exercises.

Golf Fitness Strengthen Core Muscles With Yoga Pose - 'The Plank'

The aim of this pose is to strengthen your core muscles by using them to hold your body in a flat position. This is achieved by tightening the stomach muscles, when the body is raised and in the pose. As the instructor says "Do not hold this pose for any longer than you naturally can."

Golf Fitness Hip Flexibility

Two different exercises have been included here, the first may be quite difficult for beginners.  Again, and I stress, do not do these exercises without consulting health and fitness professionals first!  Also do no more then your body will naturally allow you to do.

Half Happy Baby Pose

Knee Circles

The aim of both of these poses is to allow your skeleton to increase in flexibility and strengthen your hips.

Golf Fitness Yoga For Strengthening Your Lower Back

The purpose of the poses in this video are to help strengthen your lower back so aiding in a better posture, correct movement and increased flexibility.

Before I go on it must be pointed out that NO exercise or Golf fitness plan should be started without the proper planning and execution.  Use a training partner as often as possible and ALWAYS consult an appropriate fitness instructor and a doctor of medicine before starting any Golf fitness plan.

There are a great number more Yoga poses and exercises that can be incorporated into a Golf fitness plan.  Those above are to demonstrate just a few that are available to do.  One of the major advantages of Yoga is that it does not require a lot of equipment, so is relatively cheap, and can be done in a small place so you could do it at your own home.

I hope that you enjoyed the videos, be careful when exercising and may it improve your health and your Golf becoming a part of your normal Golf fitness plan.

Yoga For Golf - Video

The health benefits of Yoga have been known for thousands of years.  In its simplest form Yoga aids the health of the body by stretching and muscle tone exercises.  As stretching and muscle tone are an important part of life yet alone Golf I have included a video here of some Yoga exercises for you the reader.  Please enjoy...

Golf Fitness:- Dynamic Core Exercises In The Comfort Of Your Own Home At No Cost!

Golf Fitness:- Dynamic Core Exercises In The Comfort Of Your Own Home At No Cost!

The core structure of our body; so important to our movement, our posture and our power in a Golf swing. Any Golf fitness program has to include exercises to strengthen this area. Only problem is that some of us, at least at first, are embarrassed about exercising in front of others.

The solution is obvious-exercise in private. But where? At home is a good place as we feel comfortable in the familiar surroundings of our abode. We can do our Golf fitness training there.

Again we come to an issue as many people do not have a gym at their house. You will be happy to know that there are solutions. One of them is so simply it beggars belief and every building has them!

It is the floor!

You can use this simple apparatus to help strengthen your core muscles that are key to your Golf fitness.

The exercises that you can do here are:
  • Sit ups
  • Stomach crunches
  • Push ups
  • Lower back extensions
  • Trunk twists
Lets examine each in turn and see how we can do them:
  1. Sit ups: Lie flat on the floor and draw your feet towards your bottom. Keep your feet flat on the floor at all times. Place the palms of your hands either beside your ears (never place your hands behind your head) or cross your arms over your chest, whichever you find easier, and using your abdominal muscles only raise your back off the floor. No more than about just over half way from being lay down to sat up right.  Do NOT lift yourself all the way up as this puts too much pressure on your spine and stops the abdominal muscles working.. We are only exercising the lower abdominal muscles here! Repeat this in a pre-set pattern of repetitions determined by your Golf fitness program and health professional.
  2. Reverse Stomach crunches: Similar to sit ups, only in reverse and starting with your feet lifted off the floor and your knees bent at approximately 90 degrees. In that instead of lifting your back you raise your legs towards your chest and raise your shoulders so that he shoulder blades are off the floor. This exercises the deep abdominal muscles. Again do in repetitions set by your Golf fitness program and health professional.
  3. Push ups: Mainly for upper body strength but they do help with the core as you have to keep your body straight throughout the whole movement. Lie face down on the floor, put your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Have your fingers pointing forward with most of your weight on the outside of your hand. Your arms and elbows should bend naturally causing your elbows to jut out sideways in the start position of your chest on the floor. Extend your arms but stop before the elbow is full extended. Lower yourself down until your chin is about 2 inches off the floor and push up again. As with the first two exercises do a pre-set number of repetitions as defined in Golf fitness program and by your health professional.
  4. Lower back extensions: Lie face down on the floor, keep your arms straight and clasp your hands behind your back over the Lumbar region of your back. Hands can also be placed at the side of your head or arms straight down the sides of your body.  Gently, and with smooth movement raise your chest off the floor slightly. Hold for about 2-3 seconds and lower smoothly to the start position. Again repeat this exercise in the manner laid out in your Golf fitness program and by your health professional.
  5. Trunk twists: Stand up straight, reach out your arms at shoulder height so as to create a straight line from your left finger tips across your shoulders to the right finger tips. Now gently and smoothly turn (left or right) your body around your hips, do not move your hips! When you have gone as far as you can go turn the other way going past the start position all the way to the other-side of your body as you can go. Again take care that your hips remain as still as possible. This exercise can be varied by using a change to the sit up and stomach crunch exercises. By lifting your body to one side then the other or your legs then you are exercising and strengthening the muscle group at the side of your abdominals.
These basic exercises are the main stay of any golf fitness program to strengthen your core muscle structure. There are many, many more such exercises that can be done to build strength and flexibility into this area of your body. As stated above in nearly all the methodology you should only ever take up any exercise after consulting any health professional, Doctor, fitness instructor and having a program drawn up for you by them. In this case it will be a personally designed Golf fitness program as that is your chosen sport.

Never exceed the recommended amount of exercise in any Golf fitness program as you in all likely hood do more damage than good. A golf fitness program is designed to help you not hinder you. Please enjoy your Golf fitness program and improve your game.

Golf Fitness - Core Training: The Secret Of How It Will Improve Your Game

Golf Fitness - Core Training: The Secret Of How It Will Improve Your Game

When you take up your Golf stance and address the ball, do you need good posture? As you address the ball and complete your swing do you need good balance?

If you answered yes to either or both of those questions you need to understand what 'core training' is and why it is so important to you as a Golfer. This raises the question what is this core that needs training?

To the left there is a picture of what is described as the 'core' of the human body. It covers the mid and lower back as well as the front from chest to hips.

OK so why does it need training?

All these muscles help to control the movement of the spine and the trunk of the body in general.

As Golfers we all twist during the swing it is therefore important to have control over this twist and control over our balance through the swing.
A strong 'core' provides a better degree of both of these. Another benefit is that it reduces stress and injury to this part of the body and the spine as well. As the swing incorporates twisting a golf fitness program that includes strengthening your core is essential to raise the level at which you play.

There are other factors that affect balance as well. These are the 'inner ear' and the nervous system that tells the brain about body position and posture. All these areas work together to tell the brain how best to move the body to give maximum performance and minimum injury. Only one of these areas can we directly affect. That is our 'core'.

By training this area of your body, with a properly designed Golf fitness program, not only do you get a flatter tum, you get better posture, less injury and more yards on your drives.

More yards!

Yes, the improvement of your posture and muscle strength leads to better co-ordination and hence a better more powerful swing. A well devised Golf fitness plan brings all these benefits to the Golfer at all levels of the game.

Training these muscles is not hard but it is important to remember to train all the muscles by using correct exercises, with professional help, and to build up the intensity of them. It is also important to keep your body in good posture. This means keeping your back straight when standing and sitting.

These coupled with your exercises will result in a stronger and leaner core muscle structure allowing your spine to move in a more natural way.

By building a Golf fitness and exercise plan into your game you will see improvements. Do not expect them to be overnight as with anything they take time and practice as well as patience.

What we have seen so far is what the core of your body is and why it is important not just to a better game of Golf, enabled through a Golf fitness training system but to your health in general.

By incorporating exercises that will develop your core muscles and improve your posture into your Golf fitness training you will develop a better, more powerful Golf swing and drop your handicap. A result that all of us want in our game.

STRETCHING FOR GOOD GOLF

STRETCHING FOR GOOD GOLF

The importance of stretching for your golf game cannot be
stressed enough. Because a good golf swing requires that your body
be in a relaxed, tension-free state, you will want to release some of
that tension before you ever pick up a golf club.

The good news is that these stretching exercises are easy and
only take a few minutes. That means you can effectively stretch right
before you start your round.

For the first exercise, take your driver and place it across your
shoulders. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Wrap your
arms around the club at either end. Bend slightly back stretching your
back muscles. Bend side to side so that you loosen up your side
muscles and shoulders. Bend forward to extend your back.

Next, perform a partial squat with your golf club in hand. Stand
with your feet shoulder width apart and place the club in front of you
holding with both hands for balance. Lower your body by bending at
the knees, not the hips, and raise the club at the same time. Raise
back up and repeat ten times. During this whole stretch, you need to
keep your upper body very erect.

This exercise will increase your blood flow and circulation
throughout your body. This is a great total body warm up to allow
your body to make a relaxed, comfortable first swing. It also
increases the range of motion in your hip which encourages a more
synchronized swing from the ground up.

Finally, you can do a standing rotation twist stretch. Hold a golf
club chest high with the grip at shoulder width apart. While keeping
your feet and hips fairly stable, rotate the club to the right and the
left. Try to breathe out on every turn to release tension. Repeat each
side ten times.

By doing this stretch, you will be preparing specific muscles of the
trunk to make an aggressive move from the first tee on. This also
prepares proper sequencing of the swing while warming muscles. This
exercise will improve body movements during the swing from the
beginning. This way you will not sacrifice strokes on the first couple of
holes.

4 Reasons How A Golf Fitness Book Can Radically Improve Your Game,

4 Reasons How A Golf Fitness Book Can Radically Improve Your Game,

It is true, the correct information really can drop your handicap and amaze your Golfing buddies....

Warning: Not all Golf fitness books were created equal!

It is unfortunate fact that most of the help out there is actually poorly put together. The truth is that you want to improve your game and your health. You want to combine the two together. There is a bright shiny book on the shelf or the Internet and you buy it, all full of excitement.

When you open it all that shines is not Gold. For the program is not set out specifically for Golf. Rather it is more related to general fitness training with only a slight push towards Golf. We need the opposite! We need one that takes Golf and builds a fitness program around that. One that will makes us healthier and improve our game.

There are 4 specific components that any Golf fitness book should cover that will prevent you from wasting your money. These are:
  1. Strength building exercises that are Golf-specific (to help control the swing and deliver power), Cardiovascular (aerobic) for endurance, diet (all fitness programs need a specific diet) and finally, flexibility (to help prevent injury)
  2. It should show you how to assess your current golf fitness level. Give you a starting point per say. Also allows the Golfer to assess what is right for them right from the start. Therefore knowing that what they do will only help transform their game in to a thing of beauty.
  3. What is the point in doing any exercise, indeed anything, if you can not see what benefit it will bring? The book must show the Golfer how their game and fitness will benefit directly from the exercises it teaches. This will help motivate the Golfer to use the fitness training to gain the results they desire and help them transform their game.
  4. There should be progression. What is the point in starting a fitness program and it leaving you short? There are too many books and instruction courses out there that leave the reader wanting more. The book should provide this. As well as an incentive to progress as well, say in the form of a competition or similar.
My advice is that whenever you are looking for a book on Golf fitness to fully review your purchase. Make sure it is Golf fitness specific with its advice on exercises and nutrition, make sure it highlights the benefits of the exercises, also that it helps you work out where you are starting from and finally that it has a progressive program to take you higher levels of Golf fitness.

At Golf Fitness Help we want to provide all this to you and more.  One Golf fitness program we do recommend is Golf Fitness Challenge.  It is written by Susan Hill, a Golf fitness specialist, her work has been mentioned in Golf Illustrated and Travel Golf to mention two, and Craig Ballantyne, a strength and conditioning coach also a writer for several men's health publications.

Discover The Secrets To Being A Golf Superhero And Why A Golf Fitness Program Is So Important

Discover The Secrets To Being A Golf Superhero And Why A Golf Fitness Program Is So Important

Fed up with mediocre Golf, bad handicaps and nagging injuries? A Golf fitness program and help end all those issues.

You hold the club, you swing it, you are a sportsperson. Other athletes have fitness programs; so should Golfers.

The program should consist of developing strength, endurance, flexibility and even your diet/nutrition. As with any program it should be specific to your chosen discipline, in this case Golf.
It is done like this:

Look at your stance during a golf swing. The feet shoulder width apart, knees and ankles slightly bent, waist also bent and back not quite straight. If there was anything that hindered this how could you ever hope to have a consistent Golf Swing?

By having a Golf Fitness Program you can limit, even improve on any limitations and improve your Golf and your health. Don't PANIC it is not as scary as it sounds.

No running down to the gym (unless you want to), no heavy weights or marathons to run. Yes weights are used for strength and runs (cardiovascular) for endurance, but these programs are specific for Golf. Ever seen a Golfer run to the next hole?

Get the help of a proper professional trainer, particularly one that understands the rigours and strains of Golf. You will need to be 'a little creative' in designing your program but it can be done with as little as some:

Small weights
Small dumbells

Both inexpensive and very portable, I think you will agree. Can be used at the home or even in the office.
Make sure that your tailored program does not waste tiem and your effort on exercises and stretches that are not needed. Focus on a program that will increase your strengths and eliminate your weaknesses.

A Golf fitness program can very, very quickly turn your game around. This leads to more enjoyment and a lower handicap. Think this might create a viscous circle as they say.

Here is to you telling your Golfing stories at the 19th hole and having them all amazed. You may just make Captain at the next competition. Now that would be good!

Golf Fitness Exercises: Revolutionise Your Game and Be a Better Golfer

Athletes know that fitness makes them better and reduces injuries, it is no different with Golf. But what exercises to use? Below are just a few examples:
  1. Cardiovascular exercises. These help improve stamina and endurance as they work the heart and lungs. These exercises can include jogging, cycling and swimming. These should be done about three times a week and the amount of exercise done should be increased gradually.
  2. Practice your swing, not with a club but with a medicine ball. This will help strengthen your core muscles, abdominal's and back. Hold the ball out in front in a stance as if you were addressing the ball. Swing! Do both ways so as to keep the muscle structure balanced.
  3. Weights, yes weights! These will help improve muscle tone and strength. So increasing your power. The whole muscle system should be exercised but a few for starters are, squats (legs), Bench press (chest), sit ups (abs), Bicep curls and tricep dips (upper arms)
These are just a few of the basic things that as a Golfer you can do to improve your Golf Fitness and your game. As time goes on you will probably want to expand your exercise portfolio, and you should. As with anything sport related seek advice from a professional, always.
